What is a CSA?

CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a model where members pay in advance for a share of the harvest, picked up every week during the season. Having a CSA supports the startup expenses of the planting season, a fundamental challenge for all farms. In return, the farm offers our best produce every week to our members, at market-style pickups. This is our seventh season offering a CSA; we have tried a lot of versions, received a lot of feedback, and fed a lot of households. We think our current model offers the right amount of flexibility to make it relevant in busy, modern life. We try to make it a balance. We acknowledge the trust you put in us, relying on us in advance to be a great source of food that is reasonably convenient and accessible. We mostly try to be very true to the mission - you support us in advance, and you show up reliably every week to get your food. In turn, we plan our crops and fill our fields with plants to feed you what you love, and give you each a portion of what we are harvesting that week. It’s true seasonal eating, but we use our experience, and your feedback, to guide you to maximize your enjoyment and benefit from it. We try to provide staples as well as introduce new experiences to keep it fun. When we have an abundance, we share it, while focusing more each year on the quality of the food and the experience you get. We incorporate things like credits, add-ons, and holiday weeks to make sure you get food you love. We think it is a great deal, and a meaningful way for consumers to connect with local farms & producers who share your values.

The CSA is the core of our farm. We are so grateful for the opportunity to feed you. We want to grow more food, feed more families, sign up more members, and farm more land. We want the food you get in your shares to be better every season. We love bringing our neighbors here to share the beauty and connection to the land that we value so much, and we want to deepen the connection that the CSA provides every season.

At Urban Roots Farm, we do not spray synthetic chemicals. We do spray only certified Organic biological controls when we have to. We need to do it sometimes to ensure the produce does not die, or is not full of bugs. We try to avoid it entirely by improving our all-around farming practices and soil health as much as we can. We are grateful that you trust us to balance concern for the land and the environment with our desire to grow a bountiful harvest for you every week. We try to go deep into this responsibility and our choices with members when we can, and we believe the more you know, the more you trust and support local producers who share your priorities.

Members are part of our community and get access to on-farm events, discounts, and a weekly newsletter of what is available at pickup. We also offer recipes, suggested pairings and updates about what’s happening in the fields. We try to do better every year hosting everyone on our farm, and getting the most benefit out of the CSA beyond the food in your weekly shares.

The 2026 season will start the week of June 16th and runs through the end of December. Three different share sizes are available. See below for more info.

Share Options & Payment

    • All Shares include:

      • 25 weeks of market-style produce pickups at the farm, at three different price levels.

      • Some amount of credits to spend in the “farm store,” which does two things: it lets you have more say in what you get and how much you get, and it lets us provide items that aren’t for everyone, or don’t fit in the share that week.

      • A special CSA Strawberry Week ($30) in spring, and some amount of credits just for our new Holiday Shop - to be spent the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s

    • Small Share includes:

      • Base is typically 4-6 different types of produce. ($30 per week)

      • $75 of credits to start.

      • $60 of Holiday credits to start, and the $30 for Strawberries

      • Small Share Total = $915

    • Regular Share includes:

      • Base is typically 6-8 different types of produce. ($45 per week)

      • $115 of credits to start.

      • $90 of Holiday credits to start, and the $30 for Strawberries

      • Regular Share Total = $1,360

    • Family Share includes:

      • Base is typically 8+ different types of produce. ($60 per week)

      • $150 of credits to start.

      • $120 of Holiday credits to start, and the $30 for Strawberries

      • Family Total = $1,800

    NOTE ON SHARE SIZES:

    Family Share Ideal For:

    • Great for multiple-adult households/families of 3+ or those who know they love and will eat a lot of vegetables.

    Regular Share Ideal For:

    • Great for families of 2+ or those who really love vegetables and are looking for diversity each week

    Small Share Ideal For:

    • Smaller households

    • Those who want the basics, lower rate, and maximum flexibility (prefer using credit punchcards to select and purchase additional produce or other items they really want each week).

  • When you are ready to purchase your CSA membership, fill out the Sign Up Form. After signing up, we will email you to confirm your balance and help you submit a payment. You will select your preferred payment method when you fill out the signup form.

    • Bank Transfer or Credit Card with processing fee

    • Pay with cash at the farm

    Pay 50/50

    • 50% due upfront, 50% due by 8/1.

    • By check: you must provide two checks upfront, 1 post-dated for 8/1

    • By credit card with processing fee: you must provide a card on file, which will be charged on 8/1 for the remaining 50%

      You will select your preferred payment method when you fill out the signup form.

  • In addition to your Urban Roots vegetable CSA, you can choose many delicious add-on items from other farmers and local producers to your share. Our network of partners expands every year. Below are the items that are either available to add-on to your share or will be available on-farm or pre-order during the season.

    Eggs, bread, cheese, and mushrooms are available to add to your share. When you sign up to support those producers in advance, you get guaranteed access to those items on a scheduled distribution at the best possible price. We also hope to have those items available for purchase when you need them, without needing to sign up for a full season. But if you want to lock in these items every week, we strongly recommend you sign up for the share!

  • Weekly Store & Spend-Anytime Credits

    Every week there will be supplementary items from our farm and other local producers available via credit punchcards. Each share level includes some credits to begin with ($75, $115, or $150 - this is about 10% of your share value, which is the amount we expect everyone to spend on average). Additional credits will be available for purchase at any time. With credits, your share can vary more week-by-week in a flexible, convenient way. The dream is to be able to provide you the opportunity to purchase the items to complete your veggie-centric meals, helping you to reduce your trips to the grocery store. More credits can be purchased at any time, all season long.

    Holiday Week Credit Store

    New this year, we will three holiday weeks that are just a credit store. Thanksgiving week, Christmas week, and New Year’s week will be credits-only weeks, and you will shop with the $60, $90, or $120 in holiday credits that are included in your share.

  • Strawberry Week is now included in your CSA membership! Mark your calendars for sometime around May 25-June 7 (exact date TBA). Members are invited to come pick as many strawberries as they can, or take home 6 pints of strawberries that we have ready to go for you. The $30 cost for this week has been rolled into your CSA share total.

  • Purchase credits for use on the farm in January 7 - February 25, 2027. Featuring hearty winter produce like spinach, radicchio, winter squash, brassica roots, turnips, sweet potatoes, carrots, leeks, & cabbage

Veggies

    • Small Share - 4-6 items

    • Regular Share - 6-8 items

    • Family Share - 8+ items and/or larger portions of what’s included in the regular share

    • Option to use credits to purchase more produce or other products, like eggs, meat, flowers, honey, kombucha, sauces, and more

    We try to include veggies that you can prepare in different ways— some for salads, to eat raw, to roast, or to make into sauces. We grow lots of basic staples that everyone loves, and specialty items to keep things fun and interesting.

    • June: strawberries, asparagus, herbs, salad greens, snap peas

    • July/August: Heirlooms, cherry tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cantaloupe, watermelon, corn, fresh onions, beets, lettuce, fennel, kale, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, summer squash and zucchini, cucumbers, basil, parsley, oregano and mint

    • September/October: Beans, more heirlooms, cherries, pepper and eggplant, cantaloupe and corn overlapping with, then giving way to sweet potatoes, delicata squash, potatoes, onions, leeks, beets, carrots, lettuce, fennel, turnips and radishes bunches and for storage, sage, thyme, parsley, oregano 

    • November/December: Butternut and kabocha squash, sweet potatoes, potatoes, onions, more leeks, radicchio, spinach, lettuce, arugula, carrots, beets, purple top turnips, watermelon and daikon radish, cabbage, kale, more cauliflower and broccoli

  • The nature of farming in southeastern PA means that not all crops are available all the time. For instance, we know you love to eat salads, so we plant plenty of lettuces each spring. However, as soon as summer temperatures arrive, the lettuces bolt and that’s it. So you get a few weeks of lettuce in June. We sow more lettuces in the fall and grow great leaves from about October to the end of the CSA season. It ends up being a total of about 10 weeks of lettuce overall. Meanwhile, if you really want a salad in July, we suggest a tomato salad like a panzanella! This is the rhythm of eating locally and seasonally.

  • We're not certified organic, but we don’t use anything on the crops that is not certified organic. We generate much of our fertility on the farm through composting, animal manure, and cover crops. This is good, healthy food grown the best ways we know how. Come out to the farm and see for yourself! We are always happy to share the dirty details of farming—that’s what the CSA is all about!

How the Weekly CSA Pick-ups Work

    • Each week you will receive an email before pickup of what items will be included in the small, regular, and family shares, add-ons, items available for credits, updates on what’s happening at the farm and recipes/preparation suggestions. 

    • Bring your own bag or box. If you’re new, maybe a bigger one than you think. Go in the red barn. This week’s share will be written on the chalkboard. It will say what the small and large sizes are getting. The items themselves will also be labelled.

    • Please don’t come early. First of all, the school asks us not to. Secondly, we are using every minute of our time to get prepared to have a good, smooth pickup for everyone, not just the folks who are able to show up first, and we need that time to set up. 

    • Please sign-in when you arrive. There will be a checklist of names on a table by the chalkboard. It will say whether you have a small, regular, or family share, and what add-ons you have. If your name is highlighted on the sign-in sheet this week, we are showing that you have an outstanding balance so please go see our staff first.

    • Where do I start? There will be a loosely clockwise flow to pickups, starting with the sign in list and chalkboard. After you check off your name, you’ll help yourself to the items in that week’s CSA, at the quantities indicated for your size of share. Then you’ll help yourself to your weekly subscription add-ons.

    • What about my credits? After the subscription add ons will be all the different items available by using credits. These will include additional vegetables and flowers grown by us, as well as other local products, and maybe some extras from the producers of the subscription add ons.

    • Using the punch cards will be easy. We keep them all so you don’t have to. They have your names on them. It’s that easy: you come up and we tally up what you got in addition to your share, and we cross off that many credits.  1 credit is $1. If you use the $50 you already got to start with, we can sell you another with cash, check, or card. You can purchase them in advance, or wait until you need them. 

    • Need assistance? Please don't hesitate to ask a staff member if you have any questions or don't see the item you are looking for. If there’s something we can do at pickups to improve your share, let us know. It is almost always the case that we have more of every item in the fridge. And if we don’t have more, we’ll probably have an alternative for you. We always appreciate any feedback you have and will do our best to address any concerns you may have.

    • If neither day works, best thing to do is send someone in your place. They would just cross off your name, take the size of share you got, and get your add-ons as well. You do not need you to tell us if you will miss a pickup entirely. 

    • Please tell them to visit the website for more info. It’s also nice to forward them the email of the week they are picking up, as it often has information designed to enhance their enjoyment of that week’s food. We love it when you send someone, as it gives a new person a chance to try our CSA.

    • We appreciate the requests to “donate your share.” Just by becoming a member you’ve shown that you care about your community, and so do we! We donate as much as we can every week, although we don’t literally set it aside what individual members don’t pick up.

  • We are no longer offering delivery or off-site pickups. We enjoy sharing the magical beauty of the land where our members’ food is grown.

  • Pickup times are Tuesday & Thursday 3:30-6:00pm.

    • The CSA runs 28 weeks with a week’s break in September, and ending at the end of December.

    • Our days are flexible so if you need to change the day you pick up at any time, you can do so without notifying us.

    • If you can't make a pickup, you can send someone in your place - they simply cross of your name on the sign in sheet. You do not need to notify us.

  • We are located at 395 Bishop Hollow Rd. Newtown Sq, PA 19073 at the Garrett Williamson campus.

    • Pull into the main driveway with the tree logo and proceed straight through the stop sign. Turn left at the red barn into our farm.

    Parking - We have expanded our available parking next to the deer fence on the right hand side as you enter.

    • Please park facing the fence, either inside the gate of our farm, or outside on the grass.

    • Be mindful of other members when parking and pulling out. If you park on the grass, you of course don’t have to exit through the farm BUT please do not park on the grass if it is wet out.

    Exiting - We have cleared a path through the farm to a back exit, to make traffic easier and safer.

    • Continue onto the gravel drive between the greenhouses, further into the farm. Follow the arrows and turn left where the road meets the deer fence and exit through a gate in the back. There will be a big arrow on the fence pointing to the gate.

    • After exiting the gate, go straight between the garden and stone barn, then turn left toward the main driveway. Turn right at the stop sign to get back on the driveway and exit to Bishop Hollow Road.

    • Watch out for deer!

  • Your share includes composting, which means you can return your vegetable scraps to us each week and reduce waste! Important compost instructions are outlined below.

    COMPOST GUIDELINES:

    • You are required to use your own bucket, so if you don’t have one already, we recommend picking up a 5 gallon bucket with a lid at Lowes or Home Depot.

    • There will be a large macro bin behind the barn where you can dump your bucket and hose it out if you’d like.

    • What can I compost?

      • Vegetable scraps

      • Fruit scraps

      • Nuts and nut shells

      • Brown paper, shredded paper

      • Coffee grounds, paper filters

      • Grains: bread, crackers, cereal, cookies, pasta, flour, rice

      • House plant trimmings, cut flowers

    • What CAN'T I compost?

      • "Compostable" plastics (no bio bags, no bio-plastic cups or cutlery)

      • Meat, fish or bones

      • Pet or baby waste

    • Tips for composting newbies!

      • For convenience and space saving, keep a small compost bin or container on your kitchen counter or under your sink, which you can empty into the larger bucket as needed.

      • Store the compost bucket in a garage, porch or outside, preferably in the shade.  Squirrels can be very determined to get into outdoor compost containers, so consider covering it with a plastic bag, box or towel.  

      • NO bio-bag liners! You can use a large brown shopping bag if you'd like to line your container.

      • Hosing out your bin after emptying it each week helps reduce smells and the yuck factor.
